Episode 15: Barnabas Collins by Marilyn Ross

I know we have two sets of readers – some of you found us independently because you love our vintage romance novels, and some of you started listening because we’re hosted on my husband’s Dark Shadows podcast and, let’s face it, there’s a significant area of overlap in the Venn diagram of inexpensively shot 60’s soap operas about vampires and werewolves and yellowed 70’s paperbacks about lady pirates in homemade Daisy Dukes.

Finally, we’ve combined the two!

For this episode we read the first Dark Shadows tie-in book about Barnabas Collins.  It’s weird and uncomfortable and very much unlike the show you guys like so don’t @ us.  Nobody get raped but lots of people get bitten and murdered and it’s generally kind of unpleasant.

This is how they sold these things – like gum, okay?  It’s like gum.  You chew on it for thirty seconds and then you spit it out.

So “Marilyn Ross” is actually the dude writing under a pseudonym.  He wrote, like, a BAZILLION of these disposable tie-in books.  He’s in the Guiness Book of World Records for churning out shitty books.  It’s amazing.  You can read an article all about it.  The best part is, the guy was Canadian, and they didn’t broadcast the show in Canadia!  Seriously, he knew less than nothing about this Barnabas guy.  YOU CAN TELL.
