Episode 15: Barnabas Collins by Marilyn Ross

I know we have two sets of readers – some of you found us independently because you love our vintage romance novels, and some of you started listening because we’re hosted on my husband’s Dark Shadows podcast and, let’s face it, there’s a significant area of overlap in the Venn diagram of inexpensively shot 60’s soap operas about vampires and werewolves and yellowed 70’s paperbacks about lady pirates in homemade Daisy Dukes.

Finally, we’ve combined the two!

For this episode we read the first Dark Shadows tie-in book about Barnabas Collins.  It’s weird and uncomfortable and very much unlike the show you guys like so don’t @ us.  Nobody get raped but lots of people get bitten and murdered and it’s generally kind of unpleasant.

This crossover is also our last episode as part of the Collinsport Historical Society podcast.  If you want to keep listening to us, of course we’ll always have our episodes here on bodicetipplers.com, but we’ll be a lot more searchable on all of your podcast aggregators under our own name.  You can find us on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Stitcher, or just grab our RSS link.  Review us on iTunes before June 30th and you’ll be entered to win a cool giveaway!

The Collinsport Historical Society podcast itself is being relaunched and you should totally listen.  You already got the first episode if you subscribe to the feed (it came between our Flowers in the Attic episodes) but even if you’re not sure if a thousand plus episodes of 60’s daytime TV is for you, you’ll probably enjoy it.  It’s a magazine format collection of all kinds of people talking about Dark Shadows and family – try it, you’ll like it!

Our musical guest this time is Jenn Vix with “In the House of Dark Shadows”.

Evidently in Germany you don’t need to watch the show, you just do a cover.  (WHY IS HE GREEN?!)

This is how they sold these things – like gum, okay?  It’s like gum.  You chew on it for thirty seconds and then you spit it out.

So “Marilyn Ross” is actually the dude writing under a pseudonym.  He wrote, like, a BAZILLION of these disposable tie-in books.  He’s in the Guiness Book of World Records for churning out shitty books.  It’s amazing.  You can read an article all about it.  The best part is, the guy was Canadian, and they didn’t broadcast the show in Canadia!  Seriously, he knew less than nothing about this Barnabas guy.  YOU CAN TELL.

I loved your comments about Dark Shadows. To answer your question regarding who Liz's parents were, Margret and Jonas had a son who was mentioned a couple of times. He was away at school in the beginning of the novel. I believe he was mentioned again later in the novel
